my college students and i had a really cool discussion 'bout gay marriage yesterday, engendered by miss america voicing her opinion. included in our group are a darling lesbian social worker and an equally darling very christian, unmarried, pregnant car mechanic...yeah, these be my peeps. it was good tho touchy and we got to all let it all hang out while we squished sculpey, slopped paint and thought art.
my feeling is that we are so frightened, as a society, to have civilised, compassionate discussions about race, sexuality, preference etc, that crap just boils over and we act like idiots!
y'know, on a personal note, i was raised roman catholic, reeeaaallly roman catholic, as in catholic grade school complete with beanie. consequently it's a bit odd for me to wrap my brain 'round marriage not being man/woman. but the reality that counts for me more than that is my so beloved gay and lesbian friends who i want to see have happy lives, not to mention their babies, who deserve to feel good about dad and dad or mom and mom. anyway bottom line, semantics aside, the creator obviously loves gays and lesbians cuz that's a big ol' storm! as for me: i'm getting my rain barrels ready and singin' in the rain. (sheesh i'll do anything to catch a few new pals!) AND jaundiced old twice divorced broad that i am, i'm with jay leno: gays and lesbians have the right to be as miserable as the rest of us.
i say all of this in the spirit of love and hope not to offend or hurt ANYONE! and the video is hilarious and brilliant!
I think Miss CA would have done much better for herself had she simply stated: "as a Bible following fundamentalist, I would never ever be involved in a same sex relationship or marriage; however, as an American, I believe that all citizens should have the right to choose for themselves."
Ha! Great vid. I'm not even American, but this whole prop 8 thing disgusts me. The seperation of church and state (the very thing that allows fundamentalists their religious freedom) means religion should have no place in legal arguments. And I have yet to hear a reasonable argument against gay marriage that doesn't involve religion. You don't see them giving adulterers this kind of hassle - and adultery's got its own commandment. So does not killing, but I guess they don't mind when it's brown-skinned infadels.
I am so tired of so many attempting to be the moral compass of others. In My Humble Opinion I do not feel Same Sex Marriage or Relationships should be any business of the government at all. I feel it is an individual opinion. In my almost 60 years I have seen bad relationships of all kinds & also loving relationships of all kinds. If it were up to me I would give all couples a chance to stand before whomever they prefer & exchange whatever vows they want. Share in work benefits & death benefits. If we all minded our own business instead of pointing fingers at each other we would all be a lot better off!! "Judge not lest Ye shall be judged......"
Sorry Tristan... My soap box was a little dusty... Sometimes I just need to use it!! Love, Marilyn xxoo
I have friends who are gay, one in particular whom I worked with for many years. She suffered a stroke at work, and when her partner arrived at the ER, they would not allow her to give consent for treating my friend, because she was not married or a blood relative. They wasted valuable time trying to contact her brother out of state.
I believe they did have a durable power of attorney at the time, but I may be mistaken.
That turned into a rant - sorry to hijack your blog!!
I have to add my two cents here; I've been married 24 years, and any COUPLE, same sex or otherwise, that can commit to the same person for that long without killing each other deserves a damned AWARD and the church and government should butt the hell OUT. And to close, I would love a few choruses of one of my favorite songs that is NOT punk "It's raining men! Halleluia, it's raining men....!!!!" People should manage their own lives with the detail that they try to impose upon others. That wouldn't last. I firmly, completely, totally support the union of two people who choose to commit to each other. Period. May they be blessed!
Thank you for my morning laugh!!!!! Makes my profile PICTURE seem politically incorrect, however, please note I am a recovering catholic!!!! Just happened to love the little blue nun! CHEERS!
That would be funny if so many people didn't actually think that way. I am Catholic and consider myself to be a very spirital being and I do not understand what the problem here is or why there is even a problem, let alone try to legislate against marriage between any two people. Unless one was say, a child. Love is love, God is God, and He made us all exactly the way we are. I would think that God would be offended by having His named cited as a reason against gay marriage...it all just sounds hateful to me and certainly does not fit in with the idea of the Creator of Diversity. **blows kisses** Deborah
Funny Video! I have to agree with everyone else who's already commented. I think it's so rediculous that people are so upset by gay marriage. I just don't have time for prejudice in my life, especially when there are SO MANY other things to truely worry about. Take Care Y'all and let it rain. Amen
OMG Tristan! That was so funny! So funny because it is true. People are getting so outta hand!
I completely support any union between 2 people who want to share their lives together. There are plenty of heterosexuals who should have NEVER gotten married! Who stopped them?
Sometimes you just have to get political. I really don't understand all the fuss in the USA. In Toronto, we've had gay marriage for ages (not sure how long exactly but it is just not an issue here).
Tristan....you are assuming that Miss CA has the brains to go with the beauty!! Loved the video!! Can't wait for the day when the world embraces everyones individuality!! xxoo
Ha! Excellent video and tragically funny. Here where I live in Canada, same sex marriage is not a big deal and we don't seem to have the amount of intolerance that appears to be evident in the US.
Two couples we are good friends with are in same sex marriages. Both these couples have strong loving relationships, infact I would say, much stronger than some of our friends that are in "opposite" marriages (where the hell did Miss CA get that term?).
I believe that a lot of the intolerance and prejudice is based on ignorance and fear. Too bad - hopefully all the media attention on Miss CA's ill-thought answer will ramp up the dialogue and discussion on this issue.
OMG, thanks for the laugh....That was just brilliant!
While Miss Ca or anyone else is certainly entitled to follow the beliefs and dictates of their particular faith, they are NOT entitled to have that faith - or ANY faith - dictate civil law or policy.
Gay people? I love 'em. Gay marriage? All for it. This video? A riot. People with their heads so far up their behinds when it comes to playing G_d that they can't even see the light of day? Priceless! (The image, that is)
Yes! Life does sparkle and shimmer and glimmer and gleam! And I love it! Whether I'm making art, working with fabric, paper, ink and vintage findings - or working on a theatre piece - or sewing like an ecstatic dervish on a new art quilt - I'm always attracted to what shimmers just out of sight...the ghosts of sparkle and the rich dignity of decayed splendor.
Sparkle!
Shimmer!
Glimmer!
Gleam!

I hadn't seen that one. That was one of the better parodies, although there are many! George Takei was a great touch.

I love storms! I say "bring it on!"
I really loved the parody, especially the weatherman and the dancing comment.
You find the best videos! I loved the London station "spontaneous" dance one. Thanks for sharing them with us.

Sorry, I'll stop ranting now!

Great post my friend.
Love is love, that's all there is to it. Why many don't get it is beyond me...

Tristan...you're the man!
Thanks for sharing this one.
