Flea Market Friday - Quilts, Quilts, More Quilts, and Quilt Pieces...

Well, this week I had to straighten up the studio; put away all the stuff I use to create mini-theatres and tussie mussies, and ATC's and ACEO's, and other fun stuff that I make to either sell or give or use for swaps or enter into mixed media contests. I need to get some sewing done (which should be a pretty good idea for a professional quilt maker, huh?) and my studio is just too small to have paper arts and fabric arts supplies out and about at the same time. People are often envious of my space - and I will grant that it's quite attractive and a pleasant place to work. But, if somebody works in more than one medium (such as moi!), it's really too small.

But I digress. Again.

I discovered some quilts for which I thought the time had come for them to find other homes. I also found some UFO's (Unfinished Objects, for the uninitiated) which were abandoned because the people who had commissioned them either changed their minds about colors - or, as in one case, the woman who ordered it was told by her husband (after it was well on it's way to completion!) that she couldn't have it. Grrrr. So what to do with all these things? And, then ...

Eureka!

But, of course! Flea Market Friday. This is exactly the sort of things that I would take to a flea market if I were to set up a booth in a flea market (which I'm not, but that's another story for another day).

So, I will start uploading photos and writing descriptions of quilts. This could take a while. Now for those of you who couldn't care less about art quilts: first, shame on you; secondly, you can peruse Bud here while we go through the fabric surprises. Remember that this is a PG-rated blog, so no touching!

This quilt is titled "Carnivale!" It is one of the pieces from my "Blizzard" series. If you would like to see others of the Blizzard series, please click here, and you will fly on the magic carpet er, quilt to Man Made Quilts. There are only two of this series left available, and I'm listing them both here, at drastically reduced prices...because that's what a flea market is all about, right?!

"Carnivale!" is approximately 27"x27" and constructed of high quality cottons. It has a hanging sleeve attached for display purposes.

Please be sure to click on the photos so that you can get a really good look at the quilting - there is a lot of it, and in a lot of color and patterns! There are also some accent beads for shimmer and shine.

I have reduced the price on this from $600 to $125. SOLD

Shipping will be free within the continental United States.

And now - to another continent for inspiration. This African banner art quilt is 27" x 60" long with a hanging sleeve attached to the back for display.

I have always been attracted to the banner shaped quilt...there is just something pleasing about the proportions of a banner to me. Not to mention, I love having something to hang on a door!

The fabrics in this quilt are African batik (the turquoise salamanders), hand printed African blends (the purple and metallic gold fabric of the inner border and the metallic gold centers of the primary blocks), and American printed cottons.

This banner is heavily machine quilted, as can be seen in the detail photo.

As I always say, please click on the images to get a larger version. It's especially difficult (for me, anyway) to get the scale of this piece in a very small image.

The cost has been reduced from $495 to $65

Shipping will be free within the continental United States.

This piece has been an issue with me. It was going to be purchased from my website - but, when I went to get it from the storage area, I couldn't find it. Now, I'm not the greatest record keeper - and this was a large series with many sales. So, I apologized and explained that it had been sold and was no longer available.

This week, as I was rearranging, I found it. It had been rolled inside another quilt. So. I don't remember the woman name, hence, here it is!

"Iced Plums" is another piece of my "Blizzard" series, as seen on HGTV's "Simply Quilts" program.

"Iced Plums" (I just love that title, so I'll probably write it alot in this description) is 30" x 30" and has a hanging sleeve attached to the back for display.

It is constructed of American printed fabrics and Balinese batiks in plum, lavender, icy purple, and a bit of seashell pink with silver accents.

I've reduced this piece from $475 to $95.

There will no shipping charges within the continental United States.

And now one for those who like a bit of a wee quiltlet. (Could you tell I was doing my best "Finian's Rainbow" Irish accent there?

"Never Forget." The ribbon on the finger of this small art quilt (only 7.25" x 11.25") wallhanging won't let your loved one forget all the things that make you care.
'you are beautiful'
'you inspire me'
'you transform me'
'you excite me'
'I love you'
It has a small hanging sleeve on the back through which you can put a small dowel to display - or even a piece of a wire hanger.

This is a scanned image, not a photograph, so it's about as close up as I can get! However, if you would like a large file image, feel free to email me and I'll send you one.

The price of $20 will include shipping within the continental United States. SOLD

...and here is another wee and charrrrrrmin' dainty quiltlet (okay, I'll stop with the attempt at Irish accent. I'm terrible, I get it).

This miniature Tree of Life quilt is approximately 9.25" x 6.5" and constructed of quilt shop quality cottons.

As you can see from the photos, the center motif is a 4" full Tree of Life block, and the border sampler blocks are 1" square each (what was I thinking?!).

It does have a hanging sleeve attached to be used for wall display, but I've always thought it would work nicely on a dollhouse bed or vignette.

The price of $25 includes shipping withing the continental United States.

And now we come to the unfinished pieces. By "unfinished" I mean that they are TOPS ONLY. They have not had batting, backing, binding or quilting done to them. They are only the pieced fabric tops.

Okay. So you don't quilt. What the heck do you want with these? Well, there are a few things that can be done. First, of course, you could send it out to a person who does quilting for hire. But what's the fun in that? You could just line these pieces and use them as wall hangings - or small tablecloths. Some of the smaller pieces would be terrific made into pillows. But, what I like to do with quilts that haven't been quilted, but I still want to look at, is stretch them on canvas stretching bars. It gives a nice clean finish to the edges and they look complete that way. Just a thought!

This piece was going to be called "Solar Magic." This is one that was commissioned by a woman who changed her mind after it was almost completed and another one had to be made in cooler tones. My loss of time can be your gain!

It is 31" square and constructed of quilt shop quality 100% cotton.

The cost of $40 includes shipping within the continental United States.

And here we have another quilt that was commissioned and then abandoned. It seems not every woman is able to make a purchase without her husband's approval first. I got this piece going and I received a call that the client's husband said he wasn't interested in buying a Marilyn Monroe piece. So. I still have it.

Ever wonder why nobody will do commission work without a hefty deposit? Now I do.

This is actually quite a glam wallhanging. It is 26" x 31" long and constructed of quilt shop quality 100% cotton. All of the (fabulous!) photos of Marilyn are on 200count cotton muslin.

This could be finished as a small wallhanging with just a backing (and maybe some glam fringe at the bottom! who said that?). It could also easily be a small quilt by adding batting and a backing - or be a wonderful large pillow cover! It also has a nice wide border, so it would be easy to attach to canvas stretcher bars for display.

Marilyn is radiant and glamorous in all these shots!

The $25 price includes shipping within the continental United States. SOLD

This is pretty. I know I made it because it's here. But, frankly, I don't remember why it was never finished. But it wasn't. It's an out of print Moda art nouveau print in the center and other American cottons used in the subsequent borders. It's small - 8 1/2" x 11" - and would fit into almost any ready made frame. This would also make a lovely small throw pillow. $12 includes shipping within the continental United States.
And, finally, but not least. This is a lot of 9 well made Asian themed blocks -all ready for somebody to finish making them into ... well ... something!

These were being made for a quilt for the same woman who had ordered the Marilyn quilt. Ahem. Her husband wasn't into having an Asian themed quilt either. So. I now have these. I think they are lovely...but, they're not my style, really, and have no real use for them. But there is a lot of time and quality fabrics used.

The first photograph shows the two different cranes that are in the block centers.
This photos shows how the blocks would look if laid out in rows with sashing and a border added. A fast, instant, and quite striking quilt! I think red sashing would be a knockout!
And here is how they would look on point, using a feature fabric as alternating blocks. Again, a red - hm - or black? - print or solid in the alternate blocks and as a border, and this would be such a nice quilt!

The lot is $25, including shipping within the continental United States. SOLD

That's it! Geesh. I've been uploading and typing for two hours. Just shoot me in the head now, please!
If you are interested in any of these pieces, please go to my Etsy store - link up at the top on the left side of the page. Oh, heck. Just how lazy can I get? It's a link to the shop right here.

For those of you who had no interest in quilts, and were merely sipping your coffee and stuffing your face with treats, waiting for something fun to happen...forget it! I'm beat. I'm going to bed. But you just keep on sucking those ice cream cones - and don't drip on those nice suits!

Have a lovely day - be nice to people and - as always! - go make some really cool stuff!

I'm sure you are going to be selling all your wonderful quilts. I am quite dazzled by the colors and themes. I never quilted but I have appreciation for people that do. Beautiful work, Tristan.
Thanks for the advice about the acting classes. I've been an actor for many moons now, only recently thought about teaching acting. I'm really in the beginning of stages of how to even approach teaching acting. I will remember what you said because it is true people can will suck you dry.

Tristan you are going to have to help me finish those cranes quilt pieces. I think I just bought them. I have made one quilt in my life and it was nothing as complicated as the beautiful ones you do. I made a quilt for my son when he was 2. That was almost 12 years ago. Nevertheless I am glad to have the opportunity to own a piece of your work.

Ah' you inspire me with your creative quilts. I don't sew a lick, but it's on my list of things to learn. After seeing all these beauties, I think I'll put sewing back on my MUST LEARN list.

Getting to know your blog & you has been a surprise daily... You are a fabulous quilter! My daughter worked for Chitra publications for 12 years. They published several quilting magazines & dozens of specialty issues & were in business for nearly 20 years.
She would go to the International Quilt Festival in Houston, Tx every year. I always got bundles of new fabrics & tools of the trade as a "Just for Mom" gift. (I really think she got all the fabric to make up for my fear of her flying!) Anyway, believe me I have see the good, the bad & the ugly of em'. My favorite quilts have always been the Art Quilts!!
Just thought I'd share...
Have a Splendid Day!!

What stunning quilts! Truly gorgeous!!

And I hear you about requiring a deposit...It's a fine line for me. I used to require payment in full, up front, but that takes away a lot of the motivation to finish it for me, hehe....Now I require a 50% non refundable deposit. I still hit the occasional snag with someone postpooning the final payment, but overall it works. :)

Either way, I know you won't have any trouble selling these pieces - they're wonderful!
