Turning Paper Quilling Into Holiday Art

I have never tried my hand at quilling paper -  a type of ornamental craftwork involving the shaping of paper, fabric, or glass into delicate pleats or folds - mostly because I just don't want to start out with the basics and practice until I get really good at it. I want to be expert at the off-set!

So, as an example of a real master, I found these gorgeous holiday ornaments made by Beth Reece, which I discovered on Ann Martin's fabulous blog, All Things Paper. Aren't they knock-outs?!

Ms. Reece uses metallic edged paper and often adds strips she runs through a crimper. The
effects are stunning.

Swarovski flat back crystals have been glued on to catch the light for extra sparkle.

If you'd like to try your hand at making these exquisite paper treasures,
you can get the basics at Quilling 101

After you learn the basic techniques, you
can go on to make larger and more elaborate pieces by "filling in" large quilled strips
of paper with the smaller shapes you learn in the basics tutorial.

I hope you're inspired! Now go make something beautiful!

Wow! her work is beautiful!!!! I have to laugh at how you say you'd like to be an expert from the start; I'm kind of the same way - lol! And thanks for the Margaret Hamilton salute. . .she was from the Cleveland area, and was always a favorite around here. Good actress, and TCM is going to show some of her lesser known films.

Quilling is done only with paper hence the name paper filigree. There are other types of filigree (metal, plastic, etc). Meta filigree is what quilling was created to replicate. It is an art form that has professional guilds and has many types of quilling forms. There's 3d, dimensional, antique, etc. anyone can quill but to quill well takes practice. I've quilled for over 50 years now. There are many online support groups for quilling. Quillers on Yahoo is one. Good luck I hope to see your quill work soon.

Thanks for your quilling enthusiasm, Tristan. I hope you'll give it a try... if you like detailed work, I think you'll find it doesn't take long to get good at it. I'm serious! It's only paper and glue, after all. Beth started quilling just a few years ago and practically from the start her designs looked like the ones you've posted.
