The Loneliness of Dogs

The Loneliness of Dogs

About spelling the human masters
were never wrong, making me wonder
at what age did their cleverness reveal
that god spelled backwards was dog?
Later in their lives, a larger orthography
came to define them in their own letters:
somewhere between animal and angel.

But for me it's always been a dog's life.
And if a deity ever entered my shaggy
existence, it was only the unlettered moon
to whom I howled all those nights
when a restless emptiness slipped
over my fur like a black glove,

and I became the hand that fed me.

  7. Tristan,

How could you have possibly known how much I loooooove pooches! Everytime I see one, it makes me want one again. June 5, will mark my beloved Josie's death last year. That is partially why I do not have another dog right now. Maybe down the road...perhaps a Golden Retriever named Gracie!!!

    Thanks for the warm wishes!

  12. Thank you for the good wishes for mother's day and I wish a great day for you as well. Thank you for the thought provoking poem. Loved the last line. What truer sweeter love is there than that of a dog? The picture of the man hugging his dog reminded me of our Australian Shepard that passed on a little over a year ago. Thankfully it has faded to more of a bittersweet memory than pain. The pictures are great. As always, I thank you for sharing a few pics and the poem. You always add something special to my life whenever I drop by.
